Caribbean Bottling Company (CBC), local producers of Coca-Cola and Dasani products, is proud to host the annual Bahamas Goombay Punch Cup. Now in its fourth year, the competition shines a spotlight on E-Class sloops and the rich tradition of Bahamian sailing.

Launched in December 2022, the Bahamas Goombay Punch Cup measures the performance of participating sloops across three premier regattas: the Best of the Best Regatta, the National Family Island Regatta, and the Long Island Regatta.

At the conclusion of the Long Island Regatta, the sloop that accumulates the highest number of points across all three events is crowned the Bahamas Goombay Punch Cup Champion. Throughout the six-month competition season, Bahamas Goombay Punch also celebrates the participating vessels by featuring them on limited-edition cans, bringing these iconic boats and their stories to consumers across the country.

Created to elevate and preserve the sport of sailing through both financial and promotional support, the Bahamas Goombay Punch Cup continues to champion one of the nation’s most treasured traditions. In keeping with that mission, Llyod Sands of Captain Peg and Kevin Moxey of Redemption share the stories, history, and unique features that make their sloops stand out on and off the water.

How did your sloop’s name come to be?
Moxey: The sloop was named after Capt. Moxey’s faith.

Sands: The boat was named after Llyod Sands’ father, Hubert ‘Captain Peg’ Sands; a fisherman and sailor.

What’s the history of your sloop?
Sands: “The boat was built by Lloyd Sands of Little Creek, South Andros, and features traditional Androsian craftsmanship, including a sharp, flat design and salvaged frames from the horseflesh tree. The vessel was the winner of the National Family Island Regatta in 2022 and 2023 and has also claimed victories at the South Andros, Mangrove Cay, All Andros, Berry Islands Regattas, and Best of the Best competitions. In addition, the boat regularly participates in the Junior National Regattas.”

What are some structural features that make your boat special?
Moxey: “One of the boat’s distinguishing structural features is its unique design, particularly its logo, which symbolizes the hope of redemption cherished by those of the Christian faith and their anticipation of the day of Redemption.”

What inspired you to participate in The Bahamas Goombay Punch Cup?
Moxey: “We were excited to participate in the Bahamas Goombay Punch Cup for the opportunity to spread the message of Redemption to the Bahamas and to the extension of the world. Also, Goombay and Fruit Punch are my favorite beverages.”

Sands: “The Bahamas Goombay Punch Cup provides an opportunity to support Goombay Punch, a proudly Bahamian-made product, while encouraging the continued tradition of local boat building. At the same time, the brand pays tribute to the nation’s rich musical heritage, celebrating the culture and traditions that make The Bahamas unique.”
